NAME: Zoe Tiganouria
BACKGROUND: Greek Apolytirion
ACTION/SECTOR: Culture and Sport
POSITION: Musician - Composer - Owner
ORGANIZATION: Music Composers company
My Background and Career
I came in Athens when I was 18. It was very difficult to adjust in such a huge and tough city like Athens when you come from a small province. Of course I went through many difficult circumstances and not so much in the begging but also during the next years when i became a part of the field, knowing its traps which can hurt you.
However, with much patience, understanding, hard work and confidence and also with a supportive family you can overcome everything.
Whithin nine years, I made nine personal albums and compositions that are hosted in many international collections such as “Buddha Bar”.
There have been many domestic and international partnerships from 1999 till today (James Brown, Al Di-Meola, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Goran Bregović, Chico Freeman, Zülfü Livaneli).
Now I am preparing my 10th personal album and I had more experience because of the hundreds of concerts in Greece and abroad: From the Concert Hall in Athens, Thessaloniki and Ancient Epidraurus, to the Vatican, Maria Callas and the Award in Finland.
I created my own music production company since 2008, which is called “Zoe Music” in a way that I could be independent in my productions.
Today,I have also my own happy family with my husband and our daughter .
Of course, my professional life has a meaning beyond the ambition and selfishness that we all have as artists because it is a lie if anyone says we don’t.
Moreover, my life has became easier because the warmth and love can make everything passes with less pain.

In the early days of my career as an entrepreneur-artist, I never had any financial support whatsoever from a public culture agency. I was born in a poor family. I have always had their help in many matters, but not in financial ones.
Personal relationships with people who used my career to achieve their own ambitions and tried to become involved in art events and my company, without having the knowledge and experience required.
Greek musical culture prevents people from welcoming the idea that a woman may pursue a career in the arts unless she is a singer.
Being a composer (and a musician) is associated with the recording of short-lived hit songs, which is promoted by circles that are anything but music lovers. It is very difficult for a woman to play a leading role and conduct a group of musicians in such a male-dominated profession as mine.
Forming my own band, developing my own musical style and realizing the dream many other musicians have, but they dare or cannot realize, due to unfavorable circumstances, a woman instantly becomes the butt of criticism and is marginalized, whether by personal reaction or professional defense.
Among my competences, I am able to learn and put into practice new information in my work. I easily adapt myself to changes. I know and I use the required techniques to do a good job. I am a good communicator. I listen and I pay attention to other people’s problems. I like partnership building. In case of arguments I look for peaceful solution. I like to negotiate and that everybody ends up satisfied. I coordinate and motivate staff. I like to work as a team. I schedule activities and organize myself easily. I solve problems and I find solutions. I like to have objectives and to reach my goals. I am able to use other people’s experience and advice.
Among my qualities I’m ambitious, active, talkative, critical, cooperative, persistent, optimistic, innovative, trusting, practical, flexible, confident, open-minded, fast, creative, impatient, far-sighted and bossy.
Hints & Tips
My lucky phrase is :
«Never leave till tomorrow what you can do today».
Unfortunately, my career started at a frantic pace. As a result, there was no example to learn from other than my own mistakes. My job requirements led me to set up my own company so that I could be independent and develop my potential.
My advice to other women:
Provided that one has talent and a strong desire, they should work hard and be persistent and flexible. Bearing in mind that experience and social recognition come over the years, impatience never does any good since it sets traps and delays progress.
Assets to be developed:
Assets to be developed: Given that entrepreneurship in Greece is not actively supported by the state, a new entrepreneur should first evaluate thoroughly their capabilities. That is who they are and what they want to do.
They should love and be devoted to their profession, able to act on useful advice, patient, persistent and self-confident.
They should also be able to adapt, albeit only briefly, to somewhat unpleasant conditions while constantly striving for gradual personal development. However, they should be cautious that slow progress does not turn into stagnation that becomes a way of life.
Besides any formal education received, active learning and focused practical training are very important. Last but not least, strength and tolerance to mistakes that are bound to happen are always essential.
Also, it is very important for someone to have a happy family because the right husband and children are usually your emotional and psychological “shelter ” from the harsh conditions of the reality.
Weaknesses to overcome:
Idleness, delaying decisions, shifting the blame onto someone else, misery, fatalism, carelessness, low or overly high self-esteem not corresponding to one’s true skills and capabilities
