About me

NAME: Popi Skagia

COUNTRY: Greece

CITY: Athens

NATIONALITY: Greek

BACKGROUND: University Degree

ACTION/SECTOR: Industry

POSITION: Share Holder - Marketing Director

ORGANIZATION: SKAG SA

My Background and Career

I have a BA in Psychology and later on I did additional courses in Management. In 1998 I completed postgraduate courses in Marketing at EEDE – CIM Charted Institute of Marketing. I have worked for SKAGIAS TH. K. SA since 1988: as an Export Manager from 1990 to 2001 and as a Marketing Director from March 2001 to this day. Work in the exports department provided me with the opportunity to travel across the Mediterranean and the European Union and come into contact with different cultures. We had to maintain dignity as a company and be proud of the fact that we are Greek. Greece’s successful organisation of the Olympic Games in 2004 – a most difficult undertaking indeed – filled us with joy and optimism. Over the past few years, we have been dogged by serious dignity-related problems: Greece’s reputation has been so severely damaged in foreign markets that contact and business relationships with potential customers have become particularly difficult.

My Experience

Which kind of problems did you have to overcome to be where you are today?

Family: I never have spare time to spend with my daughter, who needs me so much. We often talk on the phone during the day and, when I get back home in the evening, we try to make up for the lost time. My husband and I work together, so we meet during the day.

Personal: I cannot find time to rest and relax. I have always maintained that you can have either a lot of leisure time and no money or a lot of money and no leisure time. The latter tends to change into ‘no money and no leisure time’ in Greece in 2012

My Skills

Among my competences, I am able to learn and put into practice new information in my work. I know and I use the required techniques to do a good job. I am a good communicator. I listen and I pay attention to other people’s problems. My personal development through my job is important. The personal development of people working with me is important. I like to negotiate and that everybody ends up satisfied. I coordinate and motivate staff. I schedule activities and organise myself well. I solve problems and I find solutions. I like to have objectives and to reach my goals. I am able to quickly make up my mind. I don’t hesitate to ask for advice. I am able to use other people’s experience and advice.

Among my qualities I’m active, talkative, persistent, optimistic, practical, flexible, confident, creative and democratic

Hints & Tips

My lucky phrase is: Quality shows in detail

My advice to other women: Anything you do from being a mother to directing and leading people involves patience, understanding and kindness. Always stress the good points one has. Everyone has a hidden talent; you only have to seek it out. Don’t jump to conclusions: the truth always lies somewhere in the middle. Don’t break links in your personal and professional relationships. When conflict arises, you would be better off keeping silent until tempers cool down. Love and passion for what you do spreads to those around you, be it your team (department) or the whole company.

Assets to be developed: Strength in hard times

Weaknesses to overcome:  Insecurity and fear for the future.
