NAME: DURAND Isabelle
POSITION: LAWYER AT THE TOULOUSE BAR / VOLUNTEER LEADER OF ASF
ORGANISATION: ASF (Avocats Sans Frontières)
My Background and Career
I have been a lawyer for more than 20 years and I set up my own office in 1994. I joined the association "ASF : Lawyers Without Borders" at its beginning and after several humanitarian missions in Cambodia, I now sit in the association’s board of directors. ASF consists of 5 permanent and a hundred active lawyers
Active member of the Association « ASF France » (Lawyers Without Borders), which aims to organize, on an international level, the defence, by foreign lawyers, of defendants and victims, I am also a lawyer practicing in Toulouse. Volunteers of ASF France must develop their abilities to use international legal instruments for protecting human rights and to transfer, in this field, their skills to people they work with. Such missions bring them to act abroad, either in emergency actions or in long-term actions. My investment in ASF from the outset, was a rule of law can exist in other spaces. This brings me a lot of interaction with other professionals (lawyers, judges) My role as Assistant Treasurer since November 2011 is not particularly exciting but necessary. We manage substantial funds for missions, we have employees and therefore there is a work at follow-up and management to done rationally. I personally invested in two missions in Cameroon and Cambodia, where I shall defend victims, and deliver training of personnel services to the local judicial.
Social and Economic: It is difficult to be a penalist in this very macho world. Lawyers don't take women seriously nor do the criminals. But I was helped by my family who were very supportive when I opened my own office because I lost a lot of money. And I did meet great lawyers.
I have the ability to learn and adapt easily to change, which is essential when working internationally. I love working in a team, creating partnerships and finding solutions to problems.
