My Background and Career

I found my passion and profession: I am a freelance web editor. I write especially for women (of all ages) for online media. Mostly about beauty and lifestyle. Interesting articles for the target-group. I always liked writing. In 2007, when ‘online’ became interesting, I started a blog. Quickly I got a lot of ‘followers’. I wrote about kinds of subjects young girls, as myself, were interested in. I dreamed to go on with that activity. So I replied to a job opportunity at a paper magazine for young women called LINDA. They were looking for an intern to develop their first website. I wrote articles with one other editor, and found out: being an online-editor was a real profession which I loved to do. That is what I want to be! I approached ‘Girlscene.nl’, a website for young girls with back then 1,2 million unique visitors per month. I started there as a part-time web editor in a small and young team. After six months I was asked to become editor-in-chief. I felt real happy.

My Experience

As a new challenge, I went to New York for a period of 3 months, looking whether it was possible to write for a famous American magazine. I came in at their offices, but did not succeed to became a full-time intern. Quickly I got a internship at ‘Supertrash’. When I went to New York I was a quiet and shy girl. However, when coming back, my self-confidence has increased a lot. When I returned to Holland, I was thinking a lot about my future. After half a year of applying for jobs, I took a job at the online business page of a national newspaper called De Telegraaf. I wrote mainly business articles, but missed my target group of women a lot. So I changed to became full time web editor at Sanoma, as a beauty-editor for the Online Women (6 different websites) group. After a year, in 2013, Sanoma had to cut budgets by the economic crisis and so a lot of editors were resigned. I then started, actually out of necessity, my own business as a freelancer. Looking back, I would say that, being self employed was the best decision ever! My key subjects are beauty, fashion and lifestyle for women between 20 and 65 years old.

My Skills

I can communicate well in writing and I am a social person. Don’t be afraid to approach people. Know the wishes of your target group, quite well.  In the beginning I thought it was very hard, handling my finances. So I asked for help, advice and coaching. In the future I like to pursue freelance web editing. It gives you far more contacts and satisfaction. And you can organise your own time. I love writing, I like the subjects, my contacts and I am able to afford a great lifestyle, with these activities.
