My Background and Career

After completing my education I joined the Royal Air Force including service overseas in Cyprus. In addition to normal duties I acted as interpreter for United Nations Forces, being fluent in English, German & Russian. I resigned on marriage & later returned to work in accountancy.

In 1994 I set up my own Corporate Graphic Design business, TBDA (Scotland) Ltd. This business has clients in Scotland, London, Wales, the USA, Australia & Europe. My business philosophy is to encourage staff development. Since moving to Scotland I have made many business & trade mission visits throughout Europe. Many of these were as President of Central Scotland Chamber of Commerce. Awarded an OBE in the New Years Honours List 2010 for ‘Services to Business’, I am also an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
I became a member of The British Association of Women Entrepreneurs (BAWE) in 1995 & was made a Fellow & Vice President in 1997 & elected British National President in 2004,serving until 2010. I was elected to serves on the Parent Association Les Femmes Chefs D’Entreprises Mondial (FCEM )European Task Force in October 2006 as World Vice President & served until May  2011.
Elected in 2009 to serve on the Advisory Group of the ‘Women’s National Commission’, Europe & the Commonwealth. In July 2011 I became one of 50 UK Female Entrepreneurship Ambassadors, whose aim is to spread the word amongst female pupils & students about entrepreneurship. I became a European Mentor in June 2012.

Economic: Trying to survive the recession and not making any staff redundant

Family - Having to re-climb the career ladder after giving up work to look after my son.

Opportunities:
There are always opportunities to better oneself or to change your life by doing something different like starting one’s own company
Threats:
The biggest threat in the past has been the glass ceiling, which could only be prevented my moving on. The huge threat to all businesses at present is the state of the economy

Suggestions and advice to give to women:

Do have a go, but take into account that it will not be easy. It might bring great success, but it might also bring hard times. Dedicate yourself to the task and success should follow
